Tony Thurmond is the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, a former social worker, a former school board member, and a former legislator.
For the past two years, Tony has provided strong leadership to help bridge the digital divide and expand access to technology and the internet for low-income students. Tony helped deliver more than a million devices and connected 900,000 students to the internet over the last two years to enable virtual learning.
Tony Thurmond’s top priorities are:
Recruiting and retaining 15,000 teachers to address staffing shortages in schools and to make sure students have the help they need to recover from learning gaps they have experienced because of COVID-19.
Recognizing that California has the lowest number of counselors per student of any state in the country, Tony has made it a priority to hire 10,000 new mental health counselors to address the social, emotional, and psychological needs of students.
Providing preschool education to all four year olds.
Ensuring access to universal school meals so children in our public schools do not go hungry.
Expanding reading, dual language immersion, and career counseling programs.
